Sai Baba’s advice is that self-realisation is impossible unless one gives up greed for wealth. Chapters 16 and 17 of Shri Sai Satcharita reveal the story of a visitor seeking from Baba the knowledge of Brahman
(the cause and the essence of the universe). Finding that this rich but
miserly visitor could not think of lending even five rupees to Baba in
spite of possessing a bundle of notes worth Rs. 250/- in his pocket,
Baba told him: “Brahman (the cause and essence of the universe)
has a permanent enmity with avarice. Where there is avarice, there is no
place for meditation. How then can you aim for real liberation or
renunciation? Avaricious persons also become neglectful of prescribed
rites and usages.” (69)
